Highlights of 2017 for the Choirs

The choirs started the year with the annual Holocaust Memorial Day service – a very moving event which enabled the singers to listen to a talk by the inspiring holocaust survivor Dr Martin Stern.  February saw the singers participating in Southend Makes Music at the Palace Theatre, which was followed in March by our ever popular, and well attended Mothers’ Day Concert, and a concert in the beautiful Brentwood Cathedral.

The annual St George’s Day service was well attended by our singers, who contributed greatly to the singing in the service.

In June the choirs were honoured to be able to take part in the closing evening of the highly prestigious Poppies: Wave exhibition on Barge Pier in Shoeburyness, where they performed to a crowd of over 3,000 spectators, listening to Roger’s own composition “Never Forget”.  July was an exciting month for many of the singers, who took part in two concerts in the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, before embarking on a week-long tour to Venice and Lake Garda

A fun concert on the end of Southend Pier was also an enjoyable event for singers and audience alike.  September saw the choirs performing in the delightful church of St Andrew’s Sandon, where we are always made so welcome.

We were invited to join the international boyband Collabro on stage at the Cliffs Pavilion in October, which was an exciting evening for all concerned.  70 members of the Boys’ Choir performed “Carmina Burana” at the Royal Albert Hall, and the full choirs joined in a choral concert with Southend Choral Society.  Christmas was its usual mix of fun and serious concerts, with performances ranging from shopping centres and restaurants to Claridges Hotel and the Royal Festival Hall.

The year ended with a group singing at a very special wedding in Claridges on 27th December.

We were also delighted to have the chance to host our friends from Montreal, Les Petits Chanteurs du Mont Royale, and our friends from Cottbus in Germany during the year.

 BBC Coaching Scheme

 20th April and 8th June

The Choirs are delighted to have been accepted on the BBC Ten Pieces Coaching Scheme this year, when members of the BBC Singers will visit the choirs to work with boys in the choir aged 8 – 14.  The professional singers will be working with the choir’s trebles and altos when we will be joined by boys from 5 local primary schools.  In two sessions, the boys will learn new vocal skills, fun warm ups and will spend time learning to perform Kerry Andrew’s “No Place Like” which they will perform together at the end of the sessions.
