President – Bob Chilcott

Patron – Raymond Gubbay CBE

The Southend Boys’ Choir was formed in 1970, and is one of the best known in the UK. The choir has performed with major orchestras, including RPO, LSO, Philharmonia, City of London Sinfonia, BBC SO, and has made many highly acclaimed recordings.

The choir has sung under some of the world’s greatest conductors, including Addado, Muti, Mehta, Sinopoli, Tilson Thomas, Rostropovitch, Sir David Willcocks, Sir Colin Davis, and Richard Hickox. Bob Chilcott is the choir's president, in succession to Richard Hickox, Benjamin Britten and Sir Peter Pears.

The Southend Boys’ Choir performs regularly in the major London concert venues, in addition to performances in Europe, including Ypres Cathedral, Peronne, Amiens, and Poland. Recent concerts include performances of Carmina Burana at the Royal Albert Hall, Tosca, Berlioz Te Deum, Britten’s War Requiem and Spring Symphony, in addition to performances in the BBC Proms Series in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2007 and 2011.

The choir consists of 80 boys aged 8 upwards from Southend and surrounding areas, who audition for their places in the choir. In recent years the choir was successful in gaining financial support from National Foundation for Youth Music, to develop a programme of singing workshops across Southend called Sing 4 Life, involving many young people in the area. This involved in the setting up of a Singing Club for younger singers

The Southend Boys' Choir performs regularly at major venues around the country and abroad. Their concert engagements include singing at the Royal Albert Hall, St Martin in the Fields, St James Piccadilly and in Churches and Cathedrals abroad as part of their annual tours. They are in much demand performing for corporate and business events, and can be heard singing carols in such venues as Claridges Hotel, Grosvenor House and Knightsbridge Hotels.

The choir has many commercial recordings to its name, including recording under the name of “Angelis”.

Their diversity shows them recording backing vocals for pop songs for Warner Bros, being broadcast on ITV, performing in the Crypt of the House of Commons, and singing at the launch of the liner “Millennium” in Southampton. Jointly the choirs perform for Music Clubs and festivals around the country and they have raised many thousands of pounds for charities.  They make concert tours annually, which are listed below.

Recent engagements have included performing at the Annual Conference of the Association of British Choral Directors in Lincoln Cathedral, performances with British Youth Opera, singing in a BBC TV drama, and regular performances in the Royal Albert Hall.

The choirs give concerts for Music Clubs around the country, and both make regular concert tours.

Both choirs are supported by Southend Borough Council.
