Day 4

Today has been a very busy day. We drove to Avignon and entered the city walls, and walked up to the Papal Palace. Here we were all given a ‘Histopad’ to guide us round the palace and find treasures on the way. The Histopads allowed us to go through a ‘Time Portal’ with VR experiences of the Palace as it would have been. As well as the historical buildings there was an art exhibition to wonder at.

After a quick lunch, we walked over to the famous Pont Saint Bénezet This is the bridge immortalized by the famous song ‘Sur le Pont D’Avignon’. Although this doesn’t actually cross the Rhone, it is a wonderful veiwpoint up and down the river.

Our next stop was at the Eglise Notre Dame de Prime Combe where we sang at Sunday Evensong. Although this church was away from local towns, it soon filled with a very appreciative audience and the choir received another standing ovation.

By the time the choir returned to the coach there was an important football match going on. The England Lionesses were playing Spain in the European Cup final. The match was watched on phones down the length of the coach with many of our group watching extra time in the hotel foyer and the penalties in the dining room. Fortunately England won, so after dinner everyone was able to go to bed happy.
