Why join a choir?

Singing is the most primal form of expression and has numerous benefits, including mental and physical health, self-confidence, learning and social development. It is one of the most engaging forms of self-expression which allows individuals to explore emotions, build self-esteem and develop relationships.

We estimate that 2,500 young people have been members of the Choirs over the years and many have gone on to careers in music.

But it is not just about creating professional musicians of the future or members having outstanding experiences to write about on their university or job applications but being able to help our members develop confidence, general life skills such as attention to detail and teamwork and instilling values such as commitment and perseverance.

In addition, a further benefit of music training is improved academic performance. A 2019 large-scale study showed that students who participate in music-related activities in secondary education achieve significantly higher scores in science, maths and English than non-musical classmates.

Diversity, Equality and Inclusion

At Southend Choirs, we believe that everyone can sing and we are passionate that the Choirs and music education are accessible to all. We work hard to ensure that the Choirs remain free to attend and that there is no entry requirement to read music or to have had any previous music training.

The Choirs are open to everyone.

We intend for the membership to be gender, transgender and cognitively diverse and reflect the ethnic and socio-economic demography of our city.
