Freemen of the City

On Thursday, 24th April, Roger Humphrey and Rosemary Pennington, were awarded the Freedom of the City for the enormous contribution they have made to the city, and in particular to the younger generation of Southend-on-Sea.

Roger was appointed musical director of Southend Boys Choir in 1996 and, along with Rosemary, they started the Southend Girls Choir in 1989. Since then they have built the choirs’ reputation both nationally & internationally; taking the choirs on concert tours both in Europe and further afield in America, Canada and Australia and hosting choirs from other places including Japan.

During the ceremony, councillors praised Roger and Rosemary’s dedication and tireless work to enhancing the life of Southend and inspiring countless young people, many who have gone on to musical careers of their own.

Many congratulations to Roger and Rosemary for such a well deserved award!
